Breast Cancer
Breast Cancer affects 1 in 8 women during their lives. A diagnosis of Breast Cancer is usually extremely frightening and traumatic. It is the most common cause of cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer deaths. A woman’s breasts are a source or pleasure, nurturance and identity. It can be extremely stressful and overwhelming to understand your particular diagnosis, the prognosis for your condition and treatment options. There is frequently a great deal of information to assimilate at the same time as experiencing intense feelings of sadness, anger, fear, shame and anxiety. You may be worrying about risks and side effects of treatment, financial costs, work and family responsibilities. Many women fear that changes to their bodies will affect not only how they feel about themselves but how others feel about them as well. You may worry that Breast Cancer and its treatment will affect your sexual relationship. In my therapy work with women and their partners I help my clients to articulate their feelings and concerns. I offer support in navigating traditional medical treatments and alternative therapies. I encourage the women I work with to build a support system and offer referrals when needed for support groups and other resources.
