Grief and Loss

Losing someone or something you love is extremely painful and it is an experience we all will have at some point in our lives. We may experience loss as a result of illness, disability, death or separation. A current or anticipated loss often brings up thoughts, feelings and memories from previous significant losses. When a loss is sudden and unanticipated there is no opportunity to prepare for the loss and to say goodbye. This can make the grieving process more difficult and traumatic. If the relationship with the person you have lost was fraught with pain, conflict or unfinished emotional business this can significantly intensify the experience of grief. Losing a loved one to suicide is particularly challenging as it commonly brings up feelings of failure, shame and blame and painful questions, doubts and fears. Holidays and anniversaries will frequently trigger grief reactions.

It is extremely important to experience and express the full range of emotions associated with loss. There is no right or wrong way to grieve or timetable for mourning. I help clients I work with feel supported in the painful but necessary process of working through grief. It is a privilege for me to witness the strength and healing made possible through the mourning process.
