Pregnancy Loss
Every year 890,00 of the 6.5 million pregnancies in the United States end in some form of miscarriage or stillbirth. In addition many women and couples face the crisis of an abortion decision when they learn of a genetic anomaly or other serious risk to the baby or mother. There are, as well, many pregnancy losses couples experience when an In Vitro Fertilization procedure is unsuccessful. These losses are often very sudden and unexpected and, as a result, extremely traumatic. In some cases there has been a history of previous pregnancy losses and infertility. The grieving process is made more difficult when there are no tangible memories to hold on to of the baby that was lost and insufficient support for the intense feeling of sadness, guilt, anger, fear and despair that are normal responses to such a loss. This is often an extremely isolating, painful and confusing experience. In my work with individual women and couples I offer support in navigating these difficult feelings and understanding the grief process. I also provide support for decisions related to future pregnancies and the anxieties associated with these decisions.
