Prostate Cancer

More that 186,00 men in the United States will be diagnosed with Prostate Cancer this year. With the availability of early detection and screening through the PSA blood test and physical examination more and more and younger and younger men will be faced with the diagnosis. For each of these men and their families this is a life-altering experience. Attempting to understand the aggressiveness of the cancer, the staging of the disease, various treatment options available, risks, benefits and side effects can be overwhelming and confusing. Very personal and difficult decisions about treatment often need to be made quickly and under stress. Men experience concerns about their overall health, incontinence and sexual functioning. Most people faced with a cancer diagnosis begin to have fears about the illness, the impact of the treatment and even death. In my work with men with Prostate Cancer I support men in expressing feelings of vulnerability, fear, anger, shame and depression. It is common to experience significant anxiety about sexual intimacy and the impact of the diagnosis and treatment of Prostate Cancer on both a man’s own sense of self and his relationship with his partner. I also work with couples to provide support to the relationship to deal with painful and confusing feelings of anxiety, fear and loss.
