Trauma
Trauma can involve exposure to a catastrophic or life- threatening event where serious physical, mental and emotional harm is threatened or occurs. Such traumatic experiences include witnessing violence, current or previous experiences of physical, emotional and sexual abuse, being a victim of a crime or a sexual assault, diagnosis with a life threatening illness and a sudden devastating loss. People also experience trauma as a result of chronic exposure to emotional neglect, abandonment and abuse. This can be referred to as relational trauma and may have occurred in childhood and current adult relationships.
You may be experiencing intense and unpredictable feelings of anxiety, irritability, sadness, fear and hopelessness. Interpersonal relationships may become strained. You may become withdrawn from your social support network. You may experience physical symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, sweating, headaches, sleep and appetite disturbances or other unusual physical symptoms. It is common to experience repeated thoughts and vivid memories of the traumatic event.
If you are experiencing significant difficulties in intimate relationships, you tend to remain very isolated or you have been involved in relationships in which you experienced physical and emotional abuse it is likely that there has been an earlier history of relational trauma. I have background and training in working with clients to help resolve both acute and chronic experiences of trauma.
